A Big Shout-Out To My Friend Toony!

I have plenty of online friends.

You probably do too.  These are people I’ve never met.

Some of my notables–because I think they’re really cool–include Dan Bortolotti, Paula Pant, Kerry Taylor, Robert Wasilewski, Avrom Digance, Mark Seed, Mark Zoril and Kyle Prevost.

Another one of my online buddies is Australian, Tuan Phan.

His friends call him Toony.  And he’s cooler than cool.  Two months ago, Toony and I finally met in person.  I was giving a talk in Dubai.  Soft spoken, with really kind eyes, Toony impressed me right away.

But I was already a fan.

If you’re a regular reader on my blog, you might have seen his name.

He has spent hours and hours answering readers’ questions.

He’s an absolute master in offshore pension schemes.

Like so many others, a financial company in the UAE royally ripped him off.

Now he’s on a mission to help other people.

A week doesn’t go by where I don’t think, “Please Toony, don’t let this be the week you tire of answering questions about offshore pensions.”  He’s a major asset to this site.

That’s why I’m declaring May 25th, Toony Day.

If Toony has helped you online, please send your heartfelt thanks.

And I hope, one day, to meet some of my other online buddies.

Very honoured to have you as a friend Andrew and the cool shout out 🙂

I hope everyone got the chance to do what I did on May 25th (and for future years) – spent all day on the lounge like a ‘couch potato’ 😉

Will endeavour to continue helping as many people as possible while these parasitic brokers continue to rip off hard working expats (slow at time to respond due to rotating shift work but do my best not to miss anyone seeking help on the ILAS/savings plans/offshore bonds/etc) 🙂

I like both your books …. I am Canadian in China …. I found that several Chinese Index funds match or beat the S&P 500 Index fund … they are relatively new 5 to 10 years … and can be checked on Google Finance ….. 000037 Health Care Sector Index; SZSE SME Composite 399101; Chinext Composite? 399102; SZSE Composite Index 399106 …. etc etc etc I like these indexes … God Bless, Beijing

    • Michael,

With all due respect, based on your comment, I don’t think you read my books.

Actually I have bought multiple copies of you books to share with others … in your book Global Expatriates …. you mention the dangers of developing market Index Funds with their poor returns …. which is true in regards to the Shanghai large national companies …. stock market index funds for the most part …. some of the ones I refer to are connected to the Shenzhen Stock Exchange …. which tend to be more non-governmental type companies etc etc etc … I went on Google Finance where you can compare things on that graphy thingy over short term to long term …. 5 to 10 years and beyond … etc etc etc …. a lot of these Index Funds are of that age … that is around 5 to 10 years …. so they can be compared on Google Finance with some of the Vanguard Funds you mention ….. and the ones I mentioned basically match up for that time frame … my wife is here from Beijing and so I have had access to the real estate market and stock market here over almost the last 20 years … I work at present at an international school as well and am from Ontario … so I have really appreciated all your stuff … it is quite kind of you to share what you have learned …. I have reached the 3+ mil CAD … range mostly through real estate … but am thinking of converting some of that to Index funds over the next 5 years … from your fellow Canadian millionaire teacher ….. Again God Bless, Beijing, China 🙂
